DIRECTOR'S NOTES
The original kafka is an exploration of how we treat ‘otherness’. In Australia we are currently searching for answers to this very question – in particular with regard to religion, disability, and ethnicity. As a parallel to the Australian developing consciousness in these realms, this production explores the possibility that it is that very otherness – which is condemned by society as less then and ‘unclean’ – is actually a source of fertility and growth and joy, and the adherence to the ‘norm’ is repressive and stultifying and ultimately doomed.
Gregor’s journey becomes one of fecundity as he gathers his fellow shunned vermin and give them a home – a hive – in which to find safety and community. The warzone which is the Samsa house is contrasted with the warmth and fellowship of the hive. There is also the meta reference to our wrestle with climate change. Gregor and the hive of vermin are nature being constrained and fighting back for survival as humanity and the planet fight a war for existence. The waste which is burying the cities of Australia buries our stage as the constant and futile efforts to clean it up fail again and again and again.
This production of Macaronas’ ‘The Metamorphosis’ incorporates both traditional dramatic performance (presentational mode) and elements of physical theatre (the vermin) in unison as a method of speaking to the unspoken and hearing the unheard. Working with original composition by mbryo (Matt Brown) the score follows Gregor’s journey of struggle and growth in the background as Kafka’s Samsa family cope with the day to day truths of a changing world.
