BECAUSE YOU LISTENED...
'Glengarry Glen Ross', written by David Mamet, presented by Trinity College Drama Society, and directed by Samsara.
Director’s Notes –
Glengarry Glen Ross
Glengarry Glen Ross is one of the
great modern classics of American literature.
Written in 1984, the scenario is based on work experiences Mamet had in
the late 1960’s. It evolves from Ancient
Greek tragedy, where the destiny of the characters is predetermined by their
character flaws and is inevitable and self destructive.
The defining characteristic of this
play is all of the characters are male.
During casting the question of whether to have women playing men or
women playing women was raised. This
play was written at a time when the issue of equality for women in the
workplace was a major political issue, and is based on experiences from a time
when women were secretaries and waitresses, so I decided to explore what happens
as women enter male dominated work places by changing the gender of some
characters.
What has emerged is a portrait of the
unrevealed tensions which transpire. It
highlights gender bias, respect in the workplace – between men and women, but
also between men and men – and organisational culture and politics. This is a play about work place bullying,
ethics, and the tragic consequence of a lack of honest self awareness.
